BERNARD BUFFFET “Retrospective”
From October 14th to February 26th, 2017
Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris

French painter Bernard Buffet (1945-1999) was admitted in "Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts" at the young age of 15. In 1947, he was classified as a "Miserabilist".  He has also been classed as a figurative painter, opposed to abstracts, but also and certainly to painters which practiced "Social Realism". He represents a typical demonstration of the divorce between the French and Contemporary Art and has had a prolific output: over 8,000 paintings, water colors, drawings, lithographs and engravings.

This retrospective with about one hundred carefully selected works “will reveal the unsuspected quality and variety of what will perhaps live on as one of the most fascinating and most influential painterly oeuvres of the last century.” The chronologically structured retrospective will present his favorite subjects and themes: self-portraits, still lifes, religion, literature, allegory, history, and his last, spectacular series, Death.

Bauhaus, founded in 1919 and closed in 1933, was the most influential modernist art school of the 20th century, one whose approach to teaching, and understanding art's relationship to society and technology, had a major impact both in Europe and the United States.

“The exhibition traces the periods and forms of art that forged the Bauhaus spirit: the Middle Ages and the construction of the cathedrals, the arts of the Asian and Islamic worlds, and the British Arts and Crafts movement that abolished the frontiers between art and craftsmanship. Works illustrating these sources will create a dialogue with historic Bauhaus pieces, but also with contemporary counterparts, including works by Székély, Matthieu Mercier, Karen Bisch, Sheila Hicks and Ulla von Brandenburg.”

THE SPECTACULAR SECOND EMPIRE, 1852-1870
From September 27th to January 16th
Musée d’Orsay

The second Empire was a period when France’s economy flourished.  Napoleon III ruled the country and was one of the first modern politicians, keenly aware of the role of public opinion and skillful in the management of information and outward appearances.  Paris became the envy of the entire world.

The Second Empire was associated with the decadence and superficiality of the "fête impériale". Through this exhibition, the Musée d’Orsay is looking at the entertainments and festivities of the Second Empire and at the different "stages" on which our modernity was invented. The exhibition’s thematic lay-out, with paintings, sculptures, photographs, architectural drawings, objets d’art and jewellery side by side, creates a portrait of this prolific and brilliant era.
